Chapter 5 – He’s Called The Northern Grand Duke, But He’s Friendly To Everyone (1)
It was a very cold, dry and dark place. A dark, gloomy place with no windows except for the walkways near the burning brazier; a place where the light from a blade gleamed, like the eyes of a beast shining clearly in the dark.
I held Setz’s hand tightly and crept on my toes.
‘You can’t make a sound. You will be caught.’
Holding my breath and walking carefully, I reached for the basket on the old table!
With a loud voice, a hand as big as the lid of the pot grabbed me by the back of my neck and lifted me up. The scar across his tanned face was hideous. The owner of that threatening face, as if clay was pasted on his face here and there, squeaked his white teeth at me.
“You sneak into the kitchen like a cat again?!”
He had a ferocious face like someone who had dominated the neighborhood when he was young.
I pointed my finger to one side instead of answering him.
“But I didn’t come alone.”
The man gently put me down on the floor and rubbed his hands together as soon as I spoke.
“You came in secretly, you –?! What brings you here, Young Master?”
No matter how much that vicious face tried to smile, it’s not like a pumpkin could become a watermelon just because you drew lines on it. However, the timid Setz didn’t hesitate to answer the man without shrinking.
“I didn’t come in secretly, I just came in.”
“Yes, yes. Is there a place in this castle where the Young Master cannot go?”
To Setz, he was a terrifying man! Loki, the chef in charge of Grand Duke Alkaman’s kitchen. I usually steal food from the kitchen, but Loki had to grab me by my nape and dangle me like this.
‘But, he must have had no idea I would be coming here with Setz.’
He was sweating profusely in front of me now, not knowing what to do. I laughed hatefully and sarcastically.
“Wow, look at that attitude change.”
Loki growled again with his fiery temper.
“What do you mean change of attitude! Do you think you and the Young Master are the same?”
“Is there any difference between us? Building a country benefiting mankind, so there are many great people like me!”
“Again, with that nonsense. Please stop talking nonsense in front of Young Master.”
Don’t wanna. I pouted playfully.
I then poked Loki on his forearm with my index finger and said, “Give me some cocoa, Mister.”
At my demand, Loki growled and gaped at me with his little eyes like a bird, “You, do you think I put that precious thing in the cupboard just to feed a cat?”
He was always saying something like this when he was going to give me something anyway.
‘It’s of course fun, so I keep teasing him.’
As I looked at him with a silly snicker, Setz said while blinking his big eyes, “I came here because I wanted to drink.”
“…Of course, you can. Of course.”
Loki immediately lowered his tail again at the explanation of the only Young Master. It’s funny that a man as big as a mountain was acting subserviently with an ugly face toward the much smaller Setz, so I burst out laughing.
Uncle Loki glared at me with his thin eyes at the sound of my laughter. His eyes were telling me,
‘You’ll see later.’
‘But I’ll be with Setz later, too.’
I stuck out my tongue at him. Uncle Loki couldn’t contain his hatred and thumped his feet.
“I mean, Judy is so gentle so how can her daughter be so mean?”
Judy was my mother’s name. I shrugged.
“I look like my dad. That’s what Mother said too.”
“If you’re curious, about my blood relations.”
“I didn’t say, ‘How can you be hateful?’ but ‘It’s just hateful!’”
Uncle Loki put the kettle filled with water over the fire pit as he gasped. He then took out the cocoa powder hidden deep in the cupboard. My eyes sparkled.
‘Oh, he hid it there.’
No wonder I couldn’t find it no matter how much I searched the kitchen. I decided that next time, I would secretly drink cocoa without Loki knowing.
While Uncle Loki and I were in the middle of fighting the war of nerves over cocoa and keeping each other in check, Setz blinked his eyes and watched us with one step away from us.
“Are Minelli and Loki close?”
Setz’s question gave me goosebumps. I blinked and looked at him. He was smiling as usual.
‘What is this? It was obviously strangely cold.’
I tilted my head.
‘I must have gotten goosebumps because it was so ridiculous.’
I answered, scratching the back of my arm with my fingernail. “Absolutely not, Young Master. Who would be friends with an Uncle like this?”
Saying so, I turned sideways. But what is going on? Uncle Loki, who I knew would usually snort, was standing stiffly and stuttering as he replied.
“A, absolutely not. Not at all. Not even in the future.”
No, what’s with this Uncle all of a sudden? The suddenly polite Uncle was very awkward. I tilted my head.
“… Uncle, is something wrong? Is it the effect of medicines?”
“What medicinal effects?! Respect your elders, you rascal!”
Only then did this Uncle growl with his usual red face. I giggled.
‘But making fun of you is so much fun.’
You’re a mistake starting from your name. Loki? Your name sounds like you’ll be used to shift the blame to in the end.
‘It means it’s your destiny to be teased by me.’
I decided on Uncle Loki’s identity at my own will.
Uncle Loki seated us at a small table in the kitchen after realizing that arguing with me would only lead to misunderstandings with Setz. And without saying a word, he silently removed the cocoa. Uncle then brought two large mugs on a tray after a little while. He placed it in front of Setz.
“Here you are, Young Master.”
“What about mine?”
Why are you only giving to Setz? I pouted and grunted. With a slightly rougher gesture, he set the second mug down in front of me this time.
No, but what is this? Even the state of the mugs looked different! I protested loudly.
“Ohhh? It looks like it has a strangely low amount of cocoa. No marshmallows even.”
How can you discriminate against food?! Hurting my little girl’s heart?!
When I grumbled and protested loudly, Uncle Loki asked back, dumbfounded.
“How can you eat the same thing as the Young Master, a servant!”
“Wow, you discriminate against people based on their status! Goodness, how sad! How sad it is!”
“This rascal cat!”
Far from giving up, I continued to make loud noises, so Uncle Loki rolled up his forearm. Then Setz smiled like an angel and held out his share of a mug in front of me.
“I’ll change that, Minelli.”
I grinned as I looked at the mug of cocoa that arrived in front of me.
Uncle Loki looked at it and chided Setz in a sad tone, “Ah! Young Master! If you keep tolerating Minelli like that, this narrow-minded cat will climb its way up without end!”
Narrow-minded cat?! Your words are too much.
“Anyone would see that I am the cutest and most adorable cat ever. Your eyes must be bad.”
“Tell me where that person who says you’re cute is.”
I guess I must have been more excited than usual because I met Uncle Loki after a long time. I continued teasing him a little more pointedly. But I was also cut off by Setz.
“Minelli is right.”
It was a gentle yet calm voice that did not go well with the lively atmosphere.
‘How can our Setz be so calm, innocent, and friendly?’
Setz was so pretty that my heart was pounding. I lowered my head for fear that I would have another [tnote keyword=”cardiac arrhythmia”] irregular heartbeat [/tnote] if I kept looking at that face.
‘I must train my heart muscles to be with Setz. I will die too soon at this rate because Setz is so pretty.’
As I pressed down on my pounding heart with my palm, there it was again – that strange, cold voice.
“And don’t be friendly with Minnelli. I might misunderstand.”
Not once, but twice, in that cold voice. I opened my eyes widely and looked up. Setz looked at me and smiled.
“Why, Minnelli? Doesn’t the cocoa taste good?”
“N, no. I guess my ears are weird.”
My ears must be frozen because it was cold. Such a nice and innocent Setz had a cold voice? That can never happen.
‘This was all just because I nagged the Grand Duke Alkaman earlier. His bluntness was just lingering in my ears.’
Having come to that conclusion at will, I quietly sipped my cocoa.
‘Am I trying to act like a lady now?’
Uncle Loki, who was normally this grumpy, was as quiet as he is now.
‘What is this? No fun.’
But just because the atmosphere had calmed down, I couldn’t neglect our original purpose to visit here. I had emptied the mug of cocoa, finished an apple, and found myself beating my chubby stomach. Then I asked him about the pink sugar, which was the original reason why we came to the kitchen.
“But Uncle, when will you make Easter Bunnies? I heard you brought pink sugar in particular this time.”
“Of course, in the Easter… but where did you hear that?”
I pointed at Setz without saying a word. Uncle Loki couldn’t even get angry and pressed his face like Munch’s ‘The Scream’.
“Didn’t I say it was a secret, Young Master!”
(T/N: Evil Minelli)
We left the kitchen and headed toward the garden this time. Setz tilted his head and asked me.
“But why was Loki disappointed with the pink sugar earlier?”
“That’s because I wanted to have a bite, but I guess he figured that out first.”
I answered in a casual way – because my relationship with Uncle Loki was just like that, nothing more, nothing less.
However, my answer must have sounded strange to Setz. He tilted his head and smiled at me.
“Loki must have wanted to get close to Minelli. But is he disappointed because you’re already close enough?”
“Not at all.”
How can we be close when we only play pranks on each other when we meet? I wanted to describe my relationship with Uncle Loki somewhere beyond that.
I clutched Setz’s hand and told him, “Aren’t I best friends with Young Master?”
“… You’re best friends with me?”
“Of course. You’re my favorite person in the world.”
Setz blushed and smiled shyly at my answer. It was so lovely that my own face started to automatically turn red. I shrugged my shoulders, moving my gaze to the empty air.
“Today was a good day to drink cocoa.”
“Minelli, are you in a good mood?”
Again, sweets in the North were a luxury. Of course, cocoa which contains as much sugar as its cacao was naturally difficult to find.
‘It was all thanks to Setz. I would never see it in my life if I was just Judy’s daughter, Minelli.’
Maybe it was because my blood sugar went up after a long time, I laughed out loud. Following me, Setz smiled brightly.
“If Minelli is in a good mood, then I am, too.”
How can you be this lovely? I caressed Setz’s white cheek with both hands.
‘I don’t even know how your skin can be as sticky as rice cake.’
From the very top of his head to his toes, nothing about him wasn’t pretty. I once again lamented the lack of cameras and camcorders in this world.
‘I need to leave this lovely figure behind. It’s a pity that he was only engraved in my eyes.’
This kind of beauty should be passed on from generation after generation to generation!
While I was fangirling over Setz’s face, rubbing here and that,
“Minelli, Young Master.”
A boy in a straw hat approached through the grass. He was an impressive boy with a healthy tanned face and light brown hair.
It was Rin, the son of Sir Kaltz, the Bodyguard Commander of Grand Duke Alkaman’s castle.
