* * *
In the Kingdom of Allegro, one became an adult at the age of sixteen.
One day, with one year left before her coming of age, Sefjäll became seriously ill with an unidentified illness.
(S) 〈”It hurts so much, I’m going to die soon. I don’t care about anyone, so please save me.”〉
It wasn’t until I was about to die that the doctors reluctantly came.
And Sefjäll said she wouldn’t come back to life.
(S) 〈 I don’t think I’ll be able to make it through the night.〉
When Wieteger went to see Sefjäll…
(W) 〈”Ha, ha.”〉
Wieteger found a shocking sight.
Hanging on the wall were lots of notes and papers that Sefjäll had written on her own.
(W) 〈”You wrote this? The formula on this paper?”〉
The only thing a child who’s been locked up all her life could do was read old books again and again until she was sick of them.
(W) 〈’What would that be if it survived?’〉
(W) 〈’It’s probably a genius, or a monster.’〉
Yes, she is, is what a scholar said when he saw Sefjäll, who had already become an adult.
So surprisingly, I was a genius.
Years of learning from private teachers had stimulated Sefjäll, she was constantly doing things like calculating alone or writing papers, and eventually, they formed a mountain in her prison room.
When Wieteger saw it, he swallowed his saliva and spoke.
(W)〈 “Bring me back when she’s made it through the night. She’s gonna be useful.”〉
That was the last thing I heard that night.

Fifteen years old
In the end, Sefjäll managed to survive her near-fatal fever and after that, many scholars came to visit her.
〈“Try to solve this problem first.”〉
〈 “Did you really write this essay?”〉
Sefjäll shuddered and did as she was told, and the scholars who saw her work and the results called Sefjäll a genius.
Wieteger smiled widely.
(W)〈”Yes, you were said to be the source of the misery in the kingdom, but it turns out you are not an ordinary child.”〉
Father’s smile was everything that I’d dreamed of.
He looked so kind and cool.
Sefjäll felt like she was dreaming.
(W) 〈’Of course, it’s a legend.’〉
Wieteger grumbled so much, but still, he was happy.
This moment was like…
A family novel in which a girl was the main character.
At that moment, I felt like I was the main character of a novel.
〈’I’m the scourge of the family, but I’m favored by my father?’ 〉
I didn’t expect anything like that, but…
“I didn’t know how wrong I was. In fiction, the genre of my life after that wasn’t slice-of-life, but horror. I didn’t know the reversal that was coming”
A sigh broke out of my small mouth.
Just thinking about the past made my stomach hurt.
(S) “Phew, I’m so angry…”
Wieteger, the father who’d discovered Sefjäll’s intelligence said.
(W) 〈”From now on, if you’re good and do what I tell you to do, I’ll let you out of prison when you’re an adult. But you have to keep being good.”〉
‘And what you asked me to do…’
Of course, wouldn’t be a good thing.
For generations, Allegro’s royal family had a person called “The Shadow”.
The Shadow worked in the back room, dealing with all the secrets of the Allegro royal family, and in the event of a disaster, they were condemned and executed.
Clearly, Wieteger was a genius at finding humans he could use.
He made 15-year-old Sefjäll “The Shadow”.
So, Sefjäll started making secret books.
And it turns out…
〈”What a genius. You are like an artist when it comes to bookkeeping. Connecting everything like this. Wow!”〉
That was what the secretaries said when they saw the books Sefjäll had made.
Making secret books was not just an accounting job.
After calculating income and expenditure by summing up what happened in the family, it was necessary to memorize the family’s money flow and cleverly put in false details, not making any mistakes at all.
(S) 〈”I did it again.”〉
She did everything she was told to do, and she learned and memorized everything she was taught.
Magic, math, accounting, and literature.
There was nothing I couldn’t do.
My father often praised me.
(W) 〈“You’re the smartest of your siblings.”〉
Sefjäll was truly proud and pleased.
‘My father kept his promise, though. He took me out of prison when I became an adult.’
Sefjäll was moved to a small solitary cell located inside the secretary’s office, almost passing through the White Office.
In the unusually cold storage room, Sefjäll blew her hands to keep herself warm and did everything she was told to do.
They also used magic tools to change the color of their eyes and hair, so they were able to go outside occasionally.
Although, my father sent me out just to make things easier.
I would go for a walk in the backyard where no one else came.
I was able to receive the books I wanted and read the newspaper freely.
He brought me food that I wanted to eat once a month.
‘I never received warm food, but I was still a little happy at the time.’
‘It turns out that happiness is just a façade.’
* * *
(W) 〈“Sefjäll, you’ve turned 22 years old and have worked really hard so far. Let’s go to a good place together today.”〉
That’s what my father said one day as he gave me new clothes.
My father said he’d buy me sweet snacks, which he’d always seen my mouth water at, and show me around the palace.
It was a dreamy moment.
Or so I thought until I was taken to a terrible magic lab.
‘Yes, I was taken to the lab, and forced to become a lab rat.’
It turned out that this was my true fate.
It was a terrible end.
‘It was rare for a child with white hair and red eyes to be born into the royal family.’
She was not the first ‘cursed’ child to be born.
The beginning of the Allegro royal family’s story was the source of their desire to hide these children.
They had started out as a humble family of sorcerers.
‘Yes, in fact, the Allegro part of the old sorcerer’s family in the land, and they often married and had affairs with maids.’
The Demon Clan were evil tribes that once ruled the Union of the Realms.
But that was hundreds of years ago.
Now the demons had long been driven into the abyss far after the War of the United Liberation of the Kingdom.
‘Red eyes, silvery white hair, black nails, pale skin, and tall physiques.’
They were all characteristics of the Demon Clan.
(S) “But fortunately, I was a normal human being.”
The blood of the Demon Clan had almost completely disappeared but occasionally, about once every few decades, a child with the hair and eye colors resembling those of the Demon Clan was born.
It was like a curse that didn’t go away even after generations. Or was it more like a mutant?
Sefjäll, who would now be called Mistress, had a story that would never be encountered nor talked about by the common people of the Union of the Kingdoms because of their drastic measures to hide them.
In any case, to the Allegro Family, a child with the same appearance as Sefjäll was a pain in the neck.
Since the Mistress, Sefjäll, had features connected to the days of the sorcerer’s then she was a constant reminder to the Allegro royal family of their dark history.
But they kept the child with white hair and red eyes alive.
To hate, abuse, and treat her as less than a human being.
That was the tradition of the Allegro royal family.
(S) “There were already many children like me who died after being detained unjustly. It’s a tradition that has already become unstoppable.’
The legend that comes down to the family is actually just an excuse to deal with children like Sefjäll.
‘Then what did kids like me usually do?’
She got the most basic amount of education and had her life constantly on the line.
‘After a lifetime of exile, when you become an adult, poison yourself to death.’
(W) 〈“I fed you and allowed you to study. Don’t make any trouble and just die. And don’t be born into my family bloodline again.”〉
That was the purpose of these children’s terrible lives and deaths.
It was all she could think of, Sefjäll became even more bitter.
(S) “But my destiny was the same as those born before me, so I had the job of dealing with the ugly secrets of the Allegro royal family that were purged and hidden once every few years.
Sefjäll was the right person for the job because she was going to be forced to die soon anyway.
And when Sefjäll had finished doing what they wanted, Wieteger used Sefjäll as an experimentee.
Just thinking about it made me feel nervous.
I still remember that day I was taken to the lab.
I was wearing a new dress and a new pair of shoes.
(W)〈“You will now live in this lab and work to help your siblings.”〉
It was impossible to say no, but Sefjäll said it anyway, “No, I won’t.”
Sefjäll cried and tried to run away.
But of course, she was quickly captured.
(S) 〈”Oh, but Father, I’m your… daughter. Why do you hate me so much? I’ll do better.”
It was the first time Sefjäll had ever called Wieteger her father.
Wieteger looked at Sefjäll as if she was a bug.
(W) 〈Sefjäll, you were born useless, so you should be honored to sacrifice for our family. How can you be so selfish?〉
(S) 〈”W-what are you saying……..please save me, please save me….”〉
(W) 〈How brazen. Should I have taken care of you and loved you just because you were born? Do you believe that?〉
(W) 〈“If you are not loved, apologize for being something unlovable. There is no one-sided victim in the whole world as much as you are.”〉
Father was childish, he acted like Sefjäll.
He had no affection for “a monster with white hair and red eyes”.
But Sefjäll’s endless talent and intelligence were what he was truly satisfied with.
(W)〈‘How I wish my sons had the talent that it had.’〉
Before she knew it, her father had started thinking like that.
So her father began to research a way that would take away her talents and transfer them to her brothers.
(S) “The first brother was stupid, the second brother was weak, and the third brother was talented in magic, but lacked mana. It was an experiment to fill in their gaps.”
It was an experiment that turned Sefjäll into a spirit.
(S) “If I die and become a ghost, I’m afraid I’ll curse my family like the legend says. Is that why you decided to turn me into a spirit?”
It was an experiment using the technical skills of the Magic Kingdom and the forbidden curses that have been handed down since the time of the sorcerers.
So, he carved out Sefjäll’s soul and made it into a spirit.
(S) “To be enslaved by my siblings by being turned into a spirit and assisting them in their deficiencies. That was my father’s crazy plan.”
‘But fortunately, I was on medication and under anesthesia for most of the time, so the pain wasn’t too severe.’
The experiment went on and on, until…
The last memory of her previous life was of her on life support, trapped in a huge test tube made by a sorcerer.
Tears didn’t come out even if I cried inside the test tube, it was as if I was just blowing bubbles.
And Sefjäll prayed.
I want to run away. Anywhere is fine. Just let me leave here.
But I couldn’t do that.
I want to kill him, please.
And when I came to my senses…
‘I was five years old again.’
I said I wanted to go to another world, who said I wanted to go back to the past?
I didn’t want to just turn the clock around.
I haven’t even changed the fact that I’m locked up…’
Sefjäll said, “Oh, keuk, keuk.”
* * *
It was then that she heard some boys walking.
“So a banquet is being held on the estate of the real Dragon? Wasn’t that a legendary place?”
(H) “Hey, what’s the point? They are going to pick a five-year-old, beautiful little princess. Men can’t go to just sightsee.”
“I envy you.”
(H) “He’s a mixed race of dragons, so he’s showing off. I’ve heard that everything in Remdragon is unlucky. They haven’t gone out into the world for a hundred years.”
“But, sir, I heard that she’s off limits. If you get caught by your father, you’ll be in big trouble.”
(H) “It’s okay. I can’t even tell you about it entirely but it’s our job, the royal family, to punish the demons of this kingdom.”
It was the voice of Heron, Sefjäll’s second brother.
And the third prince had followed him.
‘Some bad guys are here.’
Sefjäll’s hair stood up just by hearing his voice.
Around the age of five, Wieteger strictly banned the princes from accessing Sefjäll.
But Heron would sneak into prison.
‘On days like this, he always beat me up and bullied me.’
And today…he was wearing a sword.
On such a day, I used to get hit with a wooden sword.
‘I don’t want to get hit by a sword!’
Sefjäll looked around and then took something out and threw it.
(H) “Hey, come here. Aren’t you coming?”
Sefjäll ignored his words and hid herself under the bed.
(H) “Hey, stupid thing. What difference does it make to hide there, even an empty head would be smarter than you!”
Heron entered the prison triumphantly.
The guard used to hand over the keys to Heron easily.
(H) “Are you not coming? Let’s double your punishment today.”
At that moment, Heron stepped on something and fell on the floor. It was an ink bottle.
Heron gritted his teeth. Then Heron found Sefjäll hiding under the low bed.
But Sefjäll wasn’t shaking as she usually did.
She was staring straight at Heron, rolling her big red eyes.
Heron was surprised inside.
However, he was conscious of his younger brother being behind his back and clenched his teeth tightly.
“It’s the right thing to do! Do you want to die?”
Heron shouted loudly.
Sefjäll said, “You’re mine.”
Heron doubted his ears.
(H) ‘You know how to talk?’
It was at that moment that something stabbed Heron in the back of his hand.
(H) “H-heuk! Mom!”
It was a pointed pen.
Heron crawled back, putting his hand behind his back as he did.
Sefjäll, who had the pen, was looking at Heron.
(H) “Hey, you damn thing! Do you want to die? How dare you!”
Sefjäll, who was not afraid to see Heron screaming, said “…The sword.”
At this time, Sefjäll didn’t even realize what he said.
I started speaking properly after I was 6 years old when I began to be taught by a private teacher.
(S) “Before that, I’d been gazing at the very few people in and out of prison saying that I didn’t like the rice, but no, I actually rather like it.”
I could only speak this much right now.
(H) “You have such a short tongue!”
A baby has to repeat the same word for a very long time to get used to it.
‘I’ve barely spoken.’
So Sefjäll decided to use an ancient language, which was easier to pronounce.
(S) “La Macke, Mumara.”
Her words were this in the interpretation:
(S) “Would you brag about being beaten by me by your father? You’re failing swordsmanship.”
Heron, who was physically ill, repeatedly failed the swordsmanship class and was often scolded by his father.
‘You’re already an undergraduate, what would they say if they found out that you were hurt by a five-year-old girl?’
In Heron’s eyes, that’s what Sefjäll had meant.
(S) “Shuena Mi Miura, Mu. Mya” (You’re not allowed to come here, do you want to tell your father?)
(S) “Maara ue llonia?” (What are you doing here all the time?)
You’ll be in trouble.
Sefjäll chubby cheeks twitched, to Heron it looked as if she was criticizing him.
(H) “You, what are you talking about…”
Heron shook his hand as if he had seen a ghost and looked at Sefjäll.
(S) Sefjäll then said, “Shu Aramu. Don’t try to use a sword while your hands are shaking.” (You’re a failure at swordsmanship.)
(H) “How can you speak ancient…”
(S) “Mura Ey Mya mya.” (A ghost taught me. You punk.)
(H) “Oh, you witch!”
(S) “Do you want a taste of the pen again?”
Sefjäll held up the bloody pen.
Heron backed away.
“What’s the matter, brother? Did you happen to get beaten by her?”
Heron hurriedly hid his hands.
(H) “Oh, nothing!”
Heron held his hands tight, he even had tears around his eyes.
(H) “Hey man, that hurt. You think I’m gonna forget this? You’ll see.”
Sefjäll looked at Heron quietly and said in a nonchalant manner.
(S) “Bodon* or not.”
Heron left the prison with a furious expression on his face.
〈I wanted to laugh. It’s so comfortable.〉
In her previous life, Sefjäll crawled like a slave for her family.
What the king, her father, had said in her previous life might have been right.
〈 Did you want me to love you just for being born?〉
Yeah, maybe not all children can enjoy that right.
But I’m starting to carve out my own way.
And I’ll do it alone.
I’d been longing for affection all my life and wanting to get rid of all the loneliness, but that didn’t mean anything to me anymore.
‘What? Would you give me a chance if I’m nice?’
If she gave up on all of that, she’d feel better.
So Sefjäll gave up everything.
For a moment, peace of mind showered over her.
Filling her empty heart was…
A need for revenge.
And a sense of freedom.
‘I don’t like you either.’
Sefjäll raised one corner of her mouth and looked as evil as she could.
With chubby cheeks and the little lips and the look on her face…
She was like a quiet pet dog that had just learned how to be angry.
‘I won’t hold it in.’
Sefjäll started planning.
‘I’ll get out of here first. Revenge will come later.’

E/N: *T/L says Budon is the Korean version of Udon = a wheat pasta made in thick strips.
Point of view switches between 1st and Third Person and thoughts are italicized. Also, Wieteger calls her “it” and “that” because he doesn’t see her as human, it’s not a mistake. (︶︿︶)
